I was hoping and cheering for Harris in the American election last November, and like the majority of Canadians, as well as half of American voters, I’m deeply disappointed with the results. I’m also surprised with the speed in which Trump and his oligarch buddies are pushing ahead with their fascist wet dreams.
It's easy to feel powerless in times like this, but it's important that we all do what we can. And one of the best things us ‘regular’ people can do is contact our representatives in government and let them know, in no uncertain terms, how we feel.
If every Canadian and American voter who is angered with what Trump is doing emailed and called their reps in government, that would very likely produce a groundswell of populist resistance that could help turn things around. It could help the Democrats in the American Senate feel encouraged to take a stronger more outspoken stand against Trump.
As a #Canadian in #Ontario, I'm getting ready to vote in our upcoming provincial election. This morning I emailed my local rep in the provincial parliament with my concerns.
In short, I want to make sure that our leaders in government aren’t going to be intimidated by Trump and lick his boots.
Do not be afraid to stand out and speak out.
My email sent earlier today to my local MP follows below:
Hello Mr. Bouma,
I’m not happy with Doug Ford’s response to Trump.
A resident of Brantford, I voted for you in the last election. I’m a life-long supporter of the federal and provincial Conservative parties. I’ve been a financial contributor on many occasions in the past, and I’ve campaigned for the federal PC’s in past elections.
The upcoming election, frankly, is about one issue – how will we stand up to Trump and defend Canadian sovereignty. I don’t think I’m being over dramatic here, either. I take Trump’s threat to annex us very seriously.
- Trump has threatened military force against our NATO friend Denmark. This is a whole new level of madness.
- Trump is threatening military force against smaller countries (Panama)
- Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to annex us
- Trump has repeatedly ridiculed and belittled us as the 51st state, and “not a real country”
- Trump and Elon are rapidly moving the US towards a fascist state.
- He has insulted Trudeau as the governor of the great state of Canada. When he insults Trudeau like that, he insults me and all Canadians
I am seriously reconsidering my support for Doug Ford and the provincial PC’s for the following reasons:
- I’m disappointed that Ford so quickly re-negged on his promise to cancel the Starlink deal just because Trump ‘paused’ the tariffs.
- We should not, under any circumstances, be buying anything from Elon Musk and Starlink, because Elon is a huge supporter of Trump, who is threatening Denmark, Panama, and us.
- Trump’s 30 ‘pause’ of the tariffs doesn’t impress me, and I don’t think Canadians are fooled by it either.
- I am going to continue to buy Canadian, and avoid purchasing anything from the USA
I’m considering supporting the Liberal or NDP party, based largely on how they will deal with Trump and whether or not they will buy Starlink. I am reaching out to our local NDP and Liberal candidates to understand their position on Trump, tariffs and Starlink.
Is Ford going to stop this deal with Starlink, or is he going to follow a policy of appeasement with Musk and Trump?
